Did you go to prom? Did you like it? (I went. And I hated it… I won’t go into all of the rhymes or reasons here. Now is simply not the time or the place. If you’re really that curious… message me.)

If like me, you want a do-over… here’s your chance with Halloween Man presents…

Prom Night:1959 at Ruta Maya, April 5th!

Dance the night away with Deuce Coupe and Roxy Roca… and who knows… Maybe you’ll finally get your rightful prom queen crown.

Dust off that prom gown and be there! Doors open at 8:30pm. $5 cover for all ages!

For more information, you can see the Facebook page here

And the winner is… March 13, 2012

If you did not attend Halloween Man presents Punk Rock vs Rockabilly 2… you missed out. Host with the Most, Drew Edwards (aka Halloween Man) MCed the melodic throw-down at Flamingo Cantina.

The crowd was a mix of punks and pompadours, there to support their respected team. The air was thick with lonestars and whiskey as the rockabillies jump jived and the punks fist pumped the alcohol drenched air.

As I sat back and observed the spectacle, I knew in my heart of hearts the winner of this rumble. And then, as if to seal the deal, Dustin Stroud of Say Hello to the Angels said “I plead no contest… in a zombie apocalypse it’s the greasers that are going to be ok. They are the ones with the great hair, great style, beautiful women and fast cars.”

So, as self proclaimed ‘unofficial judge of punk rock vs rockabilly’ I do declare Rockabilly wins!

And ps… I’m pretty sure I have a girl crush on Jamie, lead singer and buxom bombshell of Danger*Cakes.

Please Excuse me While I Step on my Soap Box February 20, 2012

20120220-155357.jpg

I generally don’t like to get on my little soap box (that is typically left up to the husband to rant on), but today I pull it from its hiding place and dust it off. I read an article today that irritated me.

Last Friday, a club downtown hosted a “Silent Disco” where concert goers listened to the music with wireless headphones. Let me first ask, did I miss something? When did Austin go from the ‘LIVE music capital’ to ‘I’m going to a show, but listen on my headphones’?

Headphones are portable devices so you can listen to your recorded music on the go, while you workout, at home when you don’t want to disturb your spouse/partner/roommate. They are not used to be social. When I plug in, it generally means I don’t want to talk to anyone. Isn’t part of going to a show to be social? And, I must know… what did an unknowing onlooker think when he saw a group full of people, maybe bobbing their heads to some sort of dance music in silence? Creepy.

If you want to listen to music on your headphones, go on a run. Or become a DJ.

What are your thoughts? (And please… Feel free to tell me to get off my high horse).

Pouring one out for my homie. February 17, 2012

I've showcased this postcard before, but... I think it appropriate to use again.

It’s a sad day in Austin, TX with the news of local eccentric, Leslie Cochran announces his move to Colorado.

The streets will be a miss of his leopard print thongs, high heels and tiara adorned head. My favorite Leslie memory comes from the time I was working in a building on South Congress and 6th street. Like clockwork, Leslie would appear, in his normal scantily clad attire. He would stand on the corner, by the bus stop In front of the Starbucks and pretend to drop his keys. Every so slowly, to tease the traffic, he would bend down, ass facing the on coming traffic and gingerly pick up his “keys” only to drop them again. I would watch him, laughing- grateful I was not in my car watching his ass. Needless to say, he has endured himself in my heart forever.

What are some of your favorite Leslie memories?

One thing i know for sure… Austin will never be the same.

What’s with the Pink Gorilla? February 13, 2012

Keeping watch over the Hwy 183, East Anderson Lane, North Lamar corridor, stands a pink gorilla. Originally, I thought the gorilla was a statue of Pinky’s Pagers mascot, a pink gorilla that was left behind when Pinky’s closed down (pagers, they were so 1990…), but I have been trying to research where it came from and cannot find anything on the ape. So other than ‘keeping Austin weird,’ I have to ask…

what’s with the pink gorilla?

’bout time I have an update, eh? February 8, 2012

In lieu of my normal “Where in the World” post, (I promise, y’all… watch out for it next week. As usual, the first person to answer correctly will win a $10 gift card) I want to share with you something that came across my desk and I think is really way awesome.

Check it:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1895916213/the-mounty/widget/video.html

Eleanor and Kevin, from Austin no less, are the inventors of The Mounty. The two met doing product design consulting at Pump Studios. They became friends while designing products for inventors and creative companies and have been helping other people bring their ideas to market and now it’s their turn! With the help of Kickstarter, they hope to launch their first product.

They list very ‘Austin’ activities that The Mounty would be useful for… now I ask, what other uses can you come up with? For more information and/or to make a donation click here.

“Shit Austinites Say” January 16, 2012

Filed under: Austin Living — Faith Benitez @ 1:11 pm

Not that I absolutely agree with every thing said, but I got a kick out of it. Especially the question “So, what instrument do you play?” My husband and I joke that if you throw a rock here, you’ll hit a musician.

What are your thoughts? Did they capture stereotypical Austinites? What sayings did they miss?
